Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

John McGuinness

Question:

197 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will make maps and drawings of Kilkenny Castle and other historic buildings in Kilkenny available to the students of St. Kieran's College, County Kilkenny, conducting an IT project with the assistance of the Department of Education and Science and a company (details supplied) resulting in this information being made available to the public. [25578/99]

It is the policy of my Department, in so far as is practicable, to make drawings available to students for research purposes and I understand that some drawings of Kilkenny Castle have already been made available to students from St. Kieran's College. I should advise that it is not always possible in all cases to provide entire sets of drawings given the quantity of drawings involved and the fact that many old drawings are in a fragile condition and cannot be readily copied.

The national monuments and historic properties service of my Department will continue to assist with this project to the greatest extent possible.
