Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - Water Supply.

Donal Carey

Question:

189 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a consultant engineer has informed Clare County Council that lack of water supply in Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare, is creating a serious fire hazard; and the measures, if any, he has taken to expedite the upgrading of the public scheme. [27257/99]

An initial phase of this scheme is being constructed as part of the Latoon Bridge to Carrigoran section of the Newmarket-on-Fergus by-pass which is currently under way. The remainder of scheme is included in my Department's 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme to be advanced through planning. I authorised Clare County Council to commence preparation of contract documents in March 1998 and these documents are awaited in my Department.

It is the responsibility of sanitary authorities to make such provision as they consider necessary to ensure that a sufficient supply of water is available for fire fighting purposes in their areas.
