Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prisons Building Programme.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

212 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the initiatives, if any, he will take following the failure of Wheatfield prison to pass another security systems check; if a committee of inquiry is being considered to investigate the failures; and the legal proceedings, if any, which will be taken against the constructors of the prison. [3666/00]

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the new prison at Cloverhill. The contract in this case was between the Office of Public Works and the contractors. I am not considering a committee of inquiry. Discussions, however, are ongoing between officials of the Prison Service, the Office of Public Works and the contractors concerned with a view to the earliest possible rectification of all outstanding problems. I am being kept informed by the Director General of the Prisons Service of all relevant developments.

I am assured that further tests will continue to be carried out and all necessary dialogue will be maintained until a satisfactory resolution is found to the issues causing concern.
