Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcasses.

Ivor Callely

Question:

177 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the process to dispose of slaughtered animal carcases where tuberculosis and brucellosis reactors have been identified; the safety measures in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5198/00]

The carcases from TB and brucellosis reactors are subjected to ante and post mortem inspection in accordance with the requirements of Council Directive 64/433/EEC, as amended, in order to assess its fitness for human consumption. Where a carcase or part of a carcase is found to be infected, the meat is condemned and disposed of safely.
