Question:

155 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will appoint an inspector to inquire into recent difficulties which have occurred at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, County Louth, and in particular to examine the management structure within the hospital and to make recommendations for their resolution to ensure the facilities of the hospital are fully and properly utilised and the best standards of patient care are provided. I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 155 together.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the decision of the North Eastern Heath Board to require a medical consultant at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, to take administrative leave with pay and to the ongoing legal action in the matter. The management of services at the hospital is a matter for the North Eastern Health Board in the first instance. I understand that an independent review of the circumstances of this case is to commence shortly under the auspices of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland with the co-operation of the parties involved.
