Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Safety Measures.

David Stanton

Question:

332 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself that children attending the primary school in Saleen, County Cork, are not at risk or in danger due to the location of the school, the lack of adequate parking spaces and the increasing volume of heavy traffic on the road; the measures, if any, he will introduce to ensure the safety of the school children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6054/00]

Individual school authorities are responsible, in the first instance, for ensuring the safety and welfare of children and others in their care. While my Department is prepared to consider applications from school authorities for grant-aid towards improving safety arrangements at indi vidual schools, grant-aid is not available for works outside the vested area of the school.

In relation to new schools, design teams are asked to ensure that safety considerations are reflected in the architectural planning of the building, particularly in relation to access.
