Vol. 515 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cardiac Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

67 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason only nine heart transplants took place in the Mater Hospital in 1999, almost half the number in 1998. [6491/00]

Heart transplant operations are performed at the national cardiac surgical unit, Mater Hospital, Dublin. I have had enquiries made of the hospital authorities who have informed me that the number of heart transplants performed annually varies but that the average number per year would be 11. The hospital has also confirmed that the number of heart transplant operations dropped from 17 in 1998 to nine in 1999.

The Deputy will appreciate that the capacity of the Mater Hospital to undertake heart transplant operations is dependent on a number of factors including the availability of suitable heart donations. In this regard, I have previously indicated to the Deputy my concern regarding a decline in organ donation rates in 1999. I have been informed by the Irish Kidney Association that, in collaboration with other donor support groups, they are in the process of launching a new campaign aimed at heightening public awareness of the importance of organ donation. I would stress the continued need to highlight the importance of organ donation and the resulting benefits for patients who are fortunate to receive a transplant.
