Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Deaf Society.

Conor Lenihan

Question:

259 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the only national body representing deaf people that has international recognition is the Irish Deaf Society; and if he will instruct health boards in writing of this status in order that it is included for advice and consultation. [18311/00]

Question:

260 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact there is a concern among deaf people that health boards and his Department appear to prefer consultation with the National Association for the Deaf rather than the Irish Deaf Society. [18312/00]

Question:

261 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will ensure that his Department will consult with the Irish Deaf Society on all matters relating to the deaf; and if he will instruct the health boards accordingly. [18313/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 259 to 261, inclusive, together.

Health boards are responsible for the provision of health services to people with physical and sensory disabilities within their functional area. The health boards decide, in consultation with the regional co-ordinating committees for physical and sensory disability services on priorities for allocation of the additional funding available for development of services, including hearing impairment services, for the sector. The co-ordinating committees are representative of the health boards, the voluntary sector service providers and the service users. I understand the Irish Deaf Society's main area of concern is the promotion, support and development of Irish sign language, rather than actual service provision. However, I will bring the Deputy's concerns to the attention of officials in my Department and the chief executive officers of the health boards.
