Question:

Mr. Durkan
asked the
Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands
the names and number of consultants employed by her or her Department in each of the past three years; the total cost involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
[18489/00]
I assume the Deputy is not referring to consultants engaged on operational projects, such as engineers, architects or archaeologists who are engaged from time to time as the need arises.
These consultants are engaged to provide a particular service as an integral part of specific projects. They are paid from an individual sub head. Extracting the information in respect of operational consultancies for the years requested would have necessitated an examination of each file and the expenditure subhead relating to every project undertaken by the Department for each of the three years. Should the Deputy be interested in a particular project or consultant the relevant information can be provided.
My Department has undertaken 42 consultancies in relation to policy matters over the past three years, some of which are currently ongoing, at a total cost in excess of IR£2.4 million. The figure does not include the cost of an ongoing research project on title to land and turbary rights in some 30 raised bog SACs, which are estimated to cost no more than £10,000 each. The names of the consultants or firms of consultants as follows.
