Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

461 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 139 of 1 June 2000, any schools in the Lucan, Clondalkin, Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart and Brittas areas have been surveyed in relation to radon gas levels; if he will list such schools; and if he will provide an indicative timetable for future surveys in these areas. [18135/00]

All schools in Dublin were invited to participate in the second phase of the nationwide survey of radon levels in schools. This second phase was conducted over the 1999-2000 academic year.

I understand that the detection instruments from these schools are being returned at present to the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, RPII, for processing. The RPII expects to be in a position to issue the results to schools in Dublin later this year.

Schools in Dublin that declined to participate in this second phase have recently been invited by the RPII to participate in the third and final phase of the survey which will be conducted over the 2000-01 academic year.

Schools in the Wicklow area were surveyed in the first phase of the project.
