Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Excise Duty.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

29 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to reduce excise duty on diesel and petrol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18096/00]

I would like to inform the Deputy that there has been no increase in the rate of excise duty on unleaded petrol and on diesel since the January 1997 budget.

I am, of course, aware that the price of these products has risen in recent months. This has been due to increases in the price of crude oil on the world market and to fluctuations in currency values.

As is the case with all taxes, the situation regarding mineral oils will be examined in the context of the preparations for the next budget. I have no plans to reduce the excise duty on diesel and on petrol at this time.
