Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Question:

277 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide school transport for persons (details supplied) in County Mayo from their homes, particularly as one child will submit medical evidence of her needs. [19035/00]

As a rule, post-primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible child will have more than three miles to travel to a pick-up point. Pupils living off the main route of a service are generally expected to make their own way, or to be brought to convenient pick-up points along the main route. As two of the children in question reside well within these guidelines, it is not open to my Department to make alternative transport arrangements.

My Department has not yet received a report in respect of the third child regarding special medical needs. A report has been requested from the relevant transport liaison officer concerning the pupil. On receipt of this report, the Deputy will be advised of the outcome.
