Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Consultant Posts.

Richard Bruton

Question:

328 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the average cost of employing an extra hospital consultant. [23178/00]

The cost of employing an extra hospital consultant is not standardised, as it would be dependent on various factors, including the number of sessions required and sanctioned, the number and type of support staff required, the speciality involved, the agreed level of services being provided by the particular hospital and the type of hospital concerned. However, an indicative figure of the cost of employing a consultant, including support staff and the non-pay costs of drugs/medicines and support services, would be approximately £800,000 per annum in total.

Question No. 329 taken with Question No. 265.
