Over the weekend of the 18-19 November a section of the monument in question collapsed. Before any repair works to the wall is undertaken, officials of Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, will have to examine the structure to try and discover the cause of the collapse. This information will then be used in assessing and determining the nature of the repairs required. The Deputy will appreciate that conditions for the carrying out of survey and repair works are difficult at this time of the year. However, safety measures have been put in place, including, the locking of the gate to the monument, the cordoning off of the collapsed section and the erection of warning signs alerting the public to the dangers.
