Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Promotion.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

199 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement in response to the concerns of La Leche League of Ireland on breastfeeding policy (details supplied). [29282/00]

With regard to the concerns raised by La Leche League of Ireland I can assure the Deputy that the health promotion unit of my Department is committed to continue its support for the implementation of the recommendations of the national breastfeeding policy. This policy has guided developments and initiatives in relation to the promotion of breastfeeding.

The health promotion strategy published in July this year calls for a more structured approach to the implementation of the recommendations set out in the national breastfeeding policy and recommends the appointment of a national breastfeeding co-ordinator. The post was recently advertised in the national papers and when appointed, the successful candidate will advise on the effectiveness of current policy actions in Ireland and on measures required to increase breastfeeding rates. The establishment of a national committee on breastfeeding has been considered and arrangements are being made for the appointment of such a committee. This committee will work with the national breastfeeding co-ordinator, in partnership with community workers, in the effective implementation of the national breastfeeding policy.

I shall continue to support, as resources permit, health promotion initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding in Ireland.
