Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Signs.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

74 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide funding for local authorities to provide additional road signage specifically designed for tourists, having regard to the high level of complaints from tourists in relation to inadequate road signage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25969/00]

Non-national road grants have increased significantly in recent years from £174.8 million in 1997 to £263.74 million in 2000 – an increase of 51%. These grants are designed to provide for the ongoing needs of local authorities in relation to the non-national road network, including road signage.

The memorandum on grants for non-national roads, a revised copy of which will issue to all local authorities early next year, reminds local authorities of the need to provide adequate signposting for foreign tourists at points of entry to the country and that tourist signs are provided in accordance with the Department's guidelines to ensure that they are of maximum benefit to visitors.

Responsibility for the provision of main signage on the national road network, and for overseeing other signage on national roads, rests with the National Roads Authority.
