Vol. 535 No. 3

Written Answers - FÁS Training Programmes.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

33 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has received a report from FÁS on proposed changes on eligibility for schemes including the community employment scheme; if she will agree to changes to cater for applicants over 55 years of age; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11888/01]

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

73 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will review the eligibility for community employment schemes for people over 45 years to enable those who are long-term unemployed to remain in these schemes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11644/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 73 together.

My Department is finalising proposals for a high supports process, as required under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, which will enhance the range of options available for job seekers with employment barriers, including older persons on community employment – CE – who have limited employment opportunities in the open labour market. Further consultations with the social partners on the high supports process are due to take place shortly and I would hope that this process can be put in place at an early date.

My Department has also received from FÁS a proposal relating to older persons who had previously participated on CE, and who have not progressed to open employment. This will be considered in the above context.

I have no plans in the short-term to alter the current criteria for participation on CE other than whatever changes may be necessary to the programme to give effect to the new high supports process.
