Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Monaghan Bombing.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

217 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will include the circumstances of the death of a person (details supplied) in the Castleblayney bombing on 7 March 1976 in the investigation being carried out by Judge Barron; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14188/01]

The report of the Victims' Commission, A Place and a Name, did not specifically recommend an independent inquiry into the Castleblayney bombing of 1976, in contrast to the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 1974, where it recommended that a retired Supreme Court judge should be appointed to conduct privately an independent inquiry. The report did, however, recommend that procedures should be introduced to allow families to request reports on investigations of murders, arising from the conflict in Northern Ireland over the last 30 years, where no one has been made amenable. I am now finalising a detailed plan for the implementation of the report's recommendations based on consultations which have taken place with other relevant Departments and agencies, and I intend to submit this to Government very shortly for approval.
