Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Dick Spring

Question:

192 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if applicants who had passed the examination for entry to the Garda Síochána and were subsequently rejected on height grounds, will be deemed eligible for entry when the new regulations are introduced. [14387/01]

As I stated in my reply to the Deputy's recent question in this matter (No. 149 of 10 May, 2001), amendments to the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, providing, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána are currently being drafted in my Department. These regulations prescribe the criteria for recruitment of trainees and, following the requisite period of training, the appointment of members to the Garda Síochána.

Persons who previously applied to join the Garda Síochána but did not meet the criteria for recruitment of trainees in force at that time, such as the height requirement, are free to apply again provided they meet all of the requirements in force, in terms of age, education etc., at the time of a new competition.
