I am obliged, under the forthcoming Children Bill, currently awaiting the signature of the President, to provide separate secure detention facilities for juveniles aged 16 to 17 years. The Prison Service is currently exploring possible sites for such a secure facility in the Dublin area. The Jamestown Road location is one of the sites under consideration. A key element of the requirements for juvenile facilities is that they should be located with ready access to public transport. This is to allow the families of the young persons detained to visit on a regular basis and thus avoid unnecessary hardship.
Officials from the Prison Service have met on several occasions recently with public representatives and residents of the Inchicore area. Any proposed development will be subject to the usual planning and consultation process. It has always been the practice to engage with residents in relation to such developments and their concerns will be afforded every consideration.
