Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

439 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress made in assigning Garda divisional status in Tallaght; the progress made on the CCTV project at Tallaght; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23683/01]

I am advised by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas that, the divisional headquarters for the Dublin metropolitan area, south, will be unable to move to Tallaght until the required additional accommodation there is completed. A revised sketch scheme is currently awaited from the Office of Public Works.

In relation to a Garda CCTV system for Tallaght, I am informed by the Garda that the planning, including the consultation process, for the location and operation of system in Tallaght has commenced with the objective of having it installed and operational in 2002. The chief superintendent for DMA, south, has responsibility for overseeing the implementation of the CCTV system in Tallaght. He is assisted by an implementation committee comprising representatives of the Garda telecommunications section, who will project manage the technical aspects of the system, local crime prevention officers, the ESB, the local authority, the Office of Public Works and local business Interests. A first meeting of the implementation committee chaired by the chief superintendent took place in Crumlin Garda station on 12 June 2001. A full outline of the systems requirements were given by the Garda telecommunications section and the various interested parties were informed of the requirements that will need to be provided by them for the project's completion.

A request for tender document is currently being prepared and it is planned to seek tenders for the system before the end of the year.
