Vol. 543 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

John Perry

Question:

181 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 152 of 4 October 2001, he will make a statement on a letter from a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [27109/01]

I am informed by the director general of the prison service that the person referred to is third on a waiting list for a transfer from Fort Mitchel Place of Detention to Castlerea Prison. As I stated in my original answer on 4 October 2001, due to operational reasons, it is not always possible to arrange such transfers in a short time frame. It is, however, anticipated that this transfer will take place within days.

The case of the person referred to was discussed at a local review meeting in Fort Mitchel on 17 October 2001. Following close examination of his case it was decided that a transfer to Castlerea Prison was not possible at that time and the prisoner was informed of this decision. The reasons for this decision were the continued high level of numbers in Castlerea, which I referred to in my original response.
