Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Purchase for Destruction Scheme.

John Bruton

Question:

186 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his plans to dispose of meat and bone meal arising from the recent application of a cattle destruction scheme; if the waste is to be kept in its present condition indefinitely; and the reason he did not answer the foregoing questions when they were posted to him in Question No. 165 of 27 November 2001. [30821/01]

As indicated in my reply to Question No. 165 of 27 November 2001, arrangements are currently being made for the incineration abroad of the meat and bone meal, MBM, produced from the rendering of carcases purchased under the EU purchase for destruction scheme. There are no incineration facilities in this country. The quantity involved is about 35,000 tonnes and I am hopeful that the first shipment will take place before the end of this year as soon as commercial arrangements are finalised. The MBM will be stored and transported in its present form until it is incinerated.

All the meat and bonemeal has been produced to specified conditions and can be dry stored for long periods without deterioration.
