Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

254 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if steps will be taken to deal with a water supply further to correspondence from a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31450/01]

Proposals for water and sewerage schemes for Carraroe were included in the list of schemes submitted by Galway County Council in 1999 in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme, 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. Due to the level of competing demand and the need to prioritise individual proposals on a national basis, it has not been possible to include all schemes proposed by local authorities in the programme.

In a revised priority list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by the council last January, the South Connemara regional water supply scheme, which includes Carraroe, was placed third on the list of water schemes and the Carraroe sewerage scheme was placed fifth in the list of sewerage schemes for the period 2002-2006. The revised list will be taken into account in the context of the next phase of the water services investment programme.

In the meantime, I understand the county council intends to carry out remedial works to the existing water and sewerage schemes in Carraroe under the devolved small schemes programme.
