Vol. 547 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Legislation.

Tony Gregory

Question:

189 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action the Garda is taking in relation to micro-lites which are not covered by road traffic legislation. [3847/02]

I understand that the term "micro-lite" in this instance refers to a type of motorised scooter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that these vehicles appear to come within the definition of a mechanically propelled vehicle for the purposes of road traffic legislation. I am further informed, however, that this view is disputed by a number of owners of such vehicles and the Garda is currently awaiting clarification of the legal position in relation to these vehicles.

I should also state that questions in relation to the road traffic legislation are a matter for my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.
