Vol. 547 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

236 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education and Science if an extra teacher will be provided at a school (details supplied) in County Monaghan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3877/02]

The board of management of a primary school may apply to the primary branch of my Department for an additional teaching post if there are 14 or more non-national pupils with a significant English language deficit enrolled.

If there are less than 14 non-national pupils enrolled in a primary school the board may apply to the primary administration section of my Department for funding to provide additional teaching assistance to the non-national pupils. I am not aware that an application has been received from the board of management of the primary school in question for the appointment of a teacher of non-national pupils.
In the case of second level schools, the school authorities may apply for an additional allocation of teaching hours to meet the needs of non-national pupils with significant English language deficits. The management authority of the second level school in question has made an application for additional teaching hours in respect of non-national pupils. My Department has approved an additional allocation to meet this need.
