Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Allowances.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

132 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if a person (details supplied) in County Kildare has received the correct tax free allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5253/02]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer's tax credits which have replaced tax-free allowances are correct. The apparent decrease in the taxpayer's tax credits for the current year, when compared with his tax credits in 2001, is due to the fact that tax relief for home loan interest and medical insurance premiums is no longer shown on certificates of tax credits. Since 1 January 2002 tax relief for these items is given at source by the financial institution to which the taxpayer is paying home loan interest and his medical insurer, respectively.
