Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

189 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if Waterways Ireland is involved in public private partnerships; and if a request was made by a person (details supplied) regarding this issue. [5154/02]

The issue raised by the Deputy, in this instance, is the day-to-day responsibility of Waterways Ireland, a North-South implementation body for inland waterways, set up under the British-Irish Agreement signed in March 1999. It has advised me that it is not involved in public private partnerships on the waterways.

It does, however, enter into negotiations with developers, public authorities and private individuals who wish to enter or use the properties of Waterways Ireland. These negotiations may result in the provision of additional funding and-or additional public facilities.

Waterways Ireland also informed me that, in the instance referred to by the Deputy, it has negotiated a settlement whereby in lieu of a fee, six public mooring will be provided.
