Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

58 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the way in which his Department proposes to dispose of its mountain of meat and bone meal; if he has considered options other than incineration; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4963/02]

Stocks of meat and bone meal are currently being stored under my Department's supervision and control. Certain of these stocks are being exported on an ongoing basis to the Continent for incineration. Consideration is currently being given to bids from an open-tender competition to dispose of further stocks of meat and bone meal.

My Department is keeping under review all possible means of disposal for meat and bone meal and has followed up any suggestion or proposals put to it in this regard. A number of ideas, including its use in industry and energy production are being actively pursued. In the meantime and given that stocks continue to build up, incineration abroad has proved to be an effective means of disposal.

Question No. 59 answered with Question No. 24.
