Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Pat Carey

Question:

386 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11, who wishes to do a truck driving test, will have to acquire a full licence for a motor car prior to taking the truck test. [7763/02]

The Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1999, provide that from 15 November 1999, a person must hold a driving licence in category B – cars – to be eligible to apply for a first provisional licence for categories C1, C, D1 or D – trucks and buses. However as the person concerned was first issued with a provisional licence in category C1 prior to 15 November 1999 he is not required to pass the driving test for category B – cars – before undergoing the practical driving test for category C1. On successfully completing the practical test in category C1 the person concerned will also be entitled to category B on his licence.
