Vol. 550 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

131 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount of money spent on cancer care in each of the past five years in regard to capital and revenue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9668/02]

In each of the past five years additional on-going revenue funding has been provided under the national cancer strategy as follows: – 1998, €9.83 million; 1999, €8.70 million; 2000, €14.56 million; 2001, €23.93 million; 2002, €34.68 million; total, €91.70 million.

The information in relation to capital funding is not collected by the Department in the format requested by the Deputy. Each health board has developed an individual plan under the national development programme in line with their priorities for infrastructural development and within the funding levels notified to them by my Department.

While this Department has overall strategic responsibility for the implementation of the national development plan to develop the health service infrastructure in a co-ordinated and effective manner, the prioritisation and delivery of health service capital projects at local level is a matter for the individual health boards.
