Vol. 553 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Question:

385 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs when a one parent family allowance appeal will be dealt with for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [14341/02]

Payment of one parent family payment to the person concerned was discontinued by a deciding officer when, following a review of his means, it was decided that the person's means exceeded the statutory limit. He appealed against this decision to the social welfare appeals office. The comments of the deciding officer on the grounds of appeal are being prepared and, when completed, the appeal will be referred to an appeals officer for consideration. Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
