Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Airport Security.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Question:

146 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Transport if additional security measures have been put in place at Shannon Airport following the spray painting of a US warplane at Shannon Airport; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20467/02]

In accordance with established procedures, it is not the practice on security grounds to disclose the nature of any security measures that have been or will be put in place at aerodromes. I have however been advised that appropriate security measures are being taken at Shannon Airport by all the relevant authorities.

In relation to national civil aviation security which falls within my area of responsibility, the National Civil Aviation Security Committee (NCASC) which is chaired by a senior official from my Department has been reviewing aviation security procedures in the light of the current security situation and continues to examine specific security proposals with a view to safeguarding Irish aviation and increasing the effectiveness of existing practices and procedures. The committee comprises representatives of Government Departments, Aer Rianta, airlines, the Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, An Post, Customs and Excise, Irish Aviation Authority, the Irish Airline Pilots Association and the regional airports.

I understand that legal proceedings are being taken by the Director of Public Prosecutions under the Air Navigation and Transport Acts against those involved with the incident mentioned by the Deputy at Shannon Airport.
