Vol. 560 No. 5

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Question:

53 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of asylum seekers since 1992 who were recognised as Convention refugees, granted leave to remain here under section 3(6) of the Immigration Act, 1999, or as the parents of Irish children; and the percentage of these who are male or female and adults or children. [2999/03]

Some 4,491 asylum seekers were recognised as Convention refugees from the beginning of 1992 to the end of 2002. Some 62% were male and 38% were female. Separate age statistics are not readily available in relation to Convention refugees.

Figures are not available on the number of persons granted permission to remain in the State as parents of Irish children between 1992 and 1995. Some 7,930 current or former asylum seekers were granted permission to remain in the State on this basis between the beginning of 1996 and the end of 2002.

Some 325 persons have been given leave to remain in the State following consideration under the provisions of section 3(6) of the Immigration Act 1999 since its commencement. There is no separate breakdown available which distinguishes former asylum seekers from other persons.

Separate gender or age statistics are not available for the latter two categories.

Question No. 54 answered with Question No. 36.
