Written Answers - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

148 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the pupil-teacher ratios at primary and post-primary level at the present time on a county by county basis; his plans for the future in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6054/03]

Question:

149 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the top 20 schools at primary and post-primary level throughout the country which currently have the worst pupil-teacher ratio and the best pupil-teacher ratio; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6055/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 148 and 149 together.

The projected pupil-teacher ratios for primary and second levels for the current school year are 18.4:1 and 13.6:1, respectively. I regret that the compilation of the information sought by the Deputy regarding the pupil-teacher ratios at primary and post-primary levels on a county by county basis and in relation to the 20 schools with the best or worst pupil-teacher ratio is such that it would require the diversion of scarce staff resources which could not be justified in such circumstances.
