Vol. 565 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

John Gormley

Question:

233 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a Deputy (details supplied) has had contact on a number of occasions with the gardaí in Pearse Street in relation to the activities of individuals who are burning the plastic off copper wire in or around Hanover Quay; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that pollution from this activity is a real health hazard to residents of Ringsend; the reason no concerted action has been taken by the Garda despite repeated requests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10283/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a number of families are currently camped at Hanover Quay. From time to time they have been known to light small fires for the purpose of burning plastic covering from copper wire or to dispose of domestic waste.

A number of complaints have been received in relation to this activity. Garda investigations have so far failed to gather sufficient evidence to support a prosecution.

I am assured that the Garda are continuing to monitor the situation. Any further action required will be taken in consultation with the other agencies that have responsibilities in this area, including Dublin City Council.
