138 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the planned closure of 30 beds in a hospital (details supplied) for the months of June, July and August 2003; if he will provide the resources necessary to keep these beds open; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the decision taken by the Southern Health Board to close 30 beds at a hospital (details supplied) prior to the decision being announced; if he has held any discussions with the management of the Southern Health Board in this regard prior to or subsequent to the announcement; his view on the impact of these bed closures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself with the plan to reduce elective surgery at a hospital (details supplied) for the months of June, July and August 2003; if he was advised of this plan prior to its public announcement; if he will allocate the necessary resources to maintain the existing level of services at the hospital in the said period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 138, 139 and 140 together.

The provision of hospital services at Tralee General Hospital is a matter for the Southern Health Board. My Department has, therefore, asked the chief executive officer of the board to reply directly to the Deputy in relation to the matter raised.
