Question:

185 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No 639 of 5 November 2002, if vandalism to cars has increased significantly since then; the action the gardaí are taking; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14161/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there have been no reported incidents of car vandalism or anti-social behaviour in the area concerned since November 2002. Gardaí based at Mountjoy Garda station will continue to monitor the area regularly with mobile and foot patrols.

Question:

186 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action the Garda is taking in view of recent attacks on elderly persons in a senior citizen complex (details supplied) in Dublin 7; and if arrests have been made. [14162/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that to date, there has been one recorded attack on an elderly person at the complex mentioned. The incident occurred on 10 May, 2003, and was an aggravated burglary at the home of an 85-year old female resident of the complex. No persons have been arrested or charged in this incident to date, and the investigations are ongoing.

I am further informed that there have been a number of incidents relating to attacks on elderly people recorded in the Garda district concerned and in adjoining Garda districts. Plain clothes and uniformed gardaí were deployed on intensive foot and mobile patrolling in targeted areas. As a result, two persons were arrested and are currently before the courts. Two other persons were also arrested in the area recently for similar offences and an investigation file is currently being prepared for submission to the law officers.
