Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Finian McGrath

Question:

222 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his view on a case (details supplied); and if he will raise the case with the British authorities. [14225/03]

This case is being closely monitored by my Department. The person in question has been visited by a diplomatic officer from the embassy in London and the embassy is also in regular contact with his solicitor. I understand that the person concerned, through his solicitor, is pursuing an appeal against his conviction. As the Deputy will appreciate, in these circumstances it would not be appropriate to comment on the judicial process. I have met with members of the family of the person concerned and supporters of the campaign for his release and I have assured them that my Department will continue to provide every possible consular assistance to the person concerned.
