Vol. 567 No. 7

Written Answers. - Human Rights Abuses.

John Perry

Question:

52 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will raise with his Canadian counterpart, the findings of an Amnesty International report on human and indigenous rights violations by Canada of the Lubicon Cree nation; his views on the findings of this report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14868/03]

My Department has raised the findings of the Amnesty International report, referred to by the Deputy, with the Canadian authorities. It was drawn to their attention that Ireland is committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of indigenous peoples, and calls on all states to respect their obligations under international human rights instruments to which they are party.

Ireland voices its concerns on these issues in partnership with other like minded countries in international fora. At the 59th session of the Commission on Human Rights, which concluded in Geneva last month, Ireland co-sponsored a resolution on the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People.

Question No. 53 answered with Question No. 26.
