Written Answers. - Tax Yield.

Finian McGrath

Question:

145 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if he will increase the price of a pint by five cent to raise ?41 million in order to end the funding crisis that exists for adults with intellectual disabilities; and if he will explore other new and radical methods of raising revenue for services. [16167/03]

The question of revenue-generating measures is properly addressed in the context of the annual budget, when overall expenditure requirements are examined. As is normal, I do not comment on such matters in advance of the budget.

Question:

146 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the amount of extra revenue that can be generated by putting an extra 50 cent on a packet of 20 cigarettes. [16168/03]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the extra revenue that could be expected to be generated if there were an increase in excise duty of 50 cents (VAT inclusive) on a packet of 20 cigarettes is estimated to be €130 million in a full year.
