McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if he will increase the price of a pint by five cent to raise ?41 million in order to end the funding crisis that exists for adults with intellectual disabilities; and if he will explore other new and radical methods of raising revenue for services. The question of revenue-generating measures is properly addressed in the context of the annual budget, when overall expenditure requirements are examined. As is normal, I do not comment on such matters in advance of the budget.
146 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the amount of extra revenue that can be generated by putting an extra 50 cent on a packet of 20 cigarettes. [16168/03]
I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the extra revenue that could be expected to be generated if there were an increase in excise duty of 50 cents (VAT inclusive) on a packet of 20 cigarettes is estimated to be €130 million in a full year.
