Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Consultants.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

111 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Health and Children the way in which the pay of Irish medical consultants compares in an EU league table; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17628/03]

The only European hospital consultant salary scales currently available to my Department relate to England and Finland. Finland has a similar size population to Ireland, and I understand that consultants there are paid on average €45,000 per annum. According to figures released by the NHS hospital consultants in England are paid an average of €120,352 per annum. The average salary for a hospital consultant in Ireland is €142,051.

It can be misleading to compare pay scales across the board in the EU as various other factors must be taken into account such as private practice, allowances, working hours and awards.
