Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Billy Timmins

Question:

477 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a complaint was received from Wicklow Urban Council, Wicklow town, requesting that members of the Travelling community be removed from parking illegally at a location (details supplied); the action which was taken; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23307/03]

I have had inquiries made with the Garda authorities and I am informed that the Garda has not received any complaints from Wicklow Urban District Council in respect of a Traveller encampment at the first location in question.

However, I understand that on 9 October 2003 the Garda called at this location and cautioned the Travellers there under section 19 of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2002 to move from this location. There were a total of nine caravans there at the time.

I am further informed that a complaint was received in 2002 from Wicklow Urban District Council in respect of Travellers camped at the second location mentioned. This matter was the subject of High Court proceedings which were subsequently withdrawn when the UDC provided housing.
