Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

Arthur Morgan

Question:

507 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if his Department has monitored the measures which those responsible for voter registration are taking to ensure all eligible citizens are registered; and if the result of such monitoring will be made available. [22970/03]

The compilation and publication of the register of electors is the responsibility of local registration authorities. Detailed statutory provisions are set out in electoral law and are supplemented, as appropriate, with guidance issued by my Department. In addition, the law and the practical arrangements in relation to the registration of electors are kept under review and updated in new legislative provisions as necessary. I intend to devote considerable resources to a publicity campaign to, inter alia, encourage maximum voter registration and participation in the upcoming European and local elections.
