Vol. 576 No. 3

Written Answers. - Electronic Communications Infrastructure.

Fergus O'Dowd

Question:

88 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the position regarding the north east broadband proposals submitted to his Department by the North East Strategic Regional Partnership, including Louth County Council; and the progress to date with these proposals for Drogheda, Dundalk and Ardee. [29541/03]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to a parliamentary question, reference 28745/03.

The proposals submitted by the North East Strategic Regional Partnership are still under consideration by my Department, in consultation with the Department of Finance. A series of trials of wireless local area network technology is being concluded for my Department by Digiweb Limited in a number of locations in County Louth, namely, Dundalk, Drogheda, Ardee, Blackrock, Knockbridge and Dunleer, to assess the suitability of this technology as a platform for the delivery of advanced broadband services in the region. A full report on these trials is expected by the end of 2003.
