Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Price Awareness.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

68 Ms Lynch asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she intends to respond to the request from the Director of Consumer Affairs to make an order under the Consumer Affairs Act to require doctors, dentists and allied health professionals to publicly display their prices; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29899/03]

I have responded to the suggestion of the Director of Consumer Affairs by requesting my Department to pursue, in consultation with relevant professional bodies, measures to promote greater price awareness by patients such as the making of a prices display order under the Prices Acts.

I strongly support the idea. My Department has held initial meetings with the Irish Dental Association and the Irish Medical Organisation and I have met twice with the Director of Consumer Affairs on the matter. I hope to be in a position to implement the measure at an early date.
