1 Feb 2012, 13:24

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss the International Agreement on a Reinforced Economic Union with a number of leading experts, tomorrow Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

Addressing the Committee will be Dr Alan Ahearne of NUI Galway; Professor Karl Whelan of UCD; Tom McDonnell of the TASC think tank, and Professor John McHale, Chairman of the Fiscal Advisory Council.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “Committee Members look forward to engaging with respected voices from diverse perspectives on the new Fiscal Treaty.

“With the negotiations on the Treaty concluded in Brussels on Monday, this is the first opportunity for our Committee to discuss the final draft. This cross-section of opinion together boast wide ranging experience, both in academia and as practitioners, and we expect a lively and informed discussion.”

“The Committee intends to lead debate on the new Treaty in Ireland, whether the final decision on ratification rests with the Oireachtas or is put to referendum.”
