Communications Committee to meet Postmasters’ representatives

6 Feb 2012, 14:20

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will meet with representatives from the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) tomorrow Tuesday 7 February.

Comprising 90% of postmasters nationally, the IPU highlight and represent the interests of Postmasters with An Post, Government and politicians generally.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “Postmasters are deeply rooted in the communities they serve and post offices play an integral role in economic and social life in rural Ireland in particular. We look forward to a detailed briefing from representatives from the Irish Postmasters’ Union on their Open for Business campaign.

“Postmasters are advocating that banking and government services are driven through a single retail network of post offices to ensure the provision of accessible services throughout the country in a cost effective and sustainable way.

“Committee members intend to explore with the representatives the potential of the post office network in Ireland’s economic recovery.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 7 February in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000, at 1.30 p.m. Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
