Director of Front Line Defenders to address Foreign Affairs Committee

14 Feb 2012, 15:38

The Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade will focus on the work and priorities of Front Line Defenders and the current situation in Bahrain at its meeting tomorrow, 15th February.

Mary Lawlor, Director of Front Line Defenders, the international foundation for the protection of human rights defenders, will address the Committee.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “Front Line is the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and was established in Dublin in 2001 with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders at risk, people who work, non-violently, for any or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Front Line seeks to provide rapid and practical support to at-risk human rights defenders. Tomorrow, Mary Lawlor will update the Committee on its work and its priorities and the challenges it faces in providing support to human rights defenders.”

In addition, in a related matter, Professor Cathal Kelly, chief executive/registrar of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, will appear before the Committee to discuss the current situation in Bahrain, particularly in relation to the recent detention and ill-treatment of Irish-trained medics.

The meeting will start in Committee Room 1 at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 15th February.
