Israel’s Minister for Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs to address Foreign Affairs Committee

27 Feb 2012, 16:23

The Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade will meet with Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Minister for Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs, tomorrow, 28th February.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “We are looking forward to our meeting with Yuli Edelstein tomorrow. He is responsible for communicating the Israeli Government position to the global community and has initiated innovative citizen-based diplomacy programs that use ordinary Israelis to represent the country in social media networks and when travelling abroad. Minister Edelstein is a leading advocate for strengthening relations between Israel and Jews throughout the world and believes that Israel-Diaspora relations are vital to the future of Israel.

Given Ireland’s efforts, through initiatives such as the Global Irish Economic Forum, to reach out to our own diaspora to enhance our international reputation and aid our economic recovery, we will have an opportunity to discuss and examine schemes by Israel in this area.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss current issues in the wider Middle East, as well as the peace process, the ongoing blockade of Gaza and Israeli-Palestinian relations more generally.

The meeting will start in Committee Room 1 at 2.30pm on Tuesday, 28th February.
